There is an "I" in Google Profiles

picture-2If you haven’t done so already, put everything down and scoot over to Google Profiles. And why do you want to do this? When someone (like a recruiter or prospective employer) Googles your name, you’ll appear at the bottom of the FIRST page of the Google search results. To get started, register for a Google account.

If you use Google Gmail or other Google tools (like Google Reader), you already have an account. Use your full name when you register so you can get a “Google vanity URL” (your name in the web address).  Plus, when you fill out your Google profile, check where it says “Display my full name so I can be found in search.”   If you have a blog, website or other digital footprint on the web like VisualCV, be sure to add those links. The more information and links you complete in your profile, the higher up your Google ranking and visibility. And one more thing, write your Google Profile in the third person.

This conveys a subtle tone of being an expert and accomplished in your career. As an example, Google my name and see how it ranks on the Google page ranking. Also, take a look at how I did my Google Profile as a guide. While there isn’t an “I” in Google, there certainly is one in “Profile.”

Thanks for the post Glenn, this is valuable info. Also, it’s always nice to find a fellow Trojan in Chicago.

Sure thing Dave, hope the Google Profile works to boost your visibility. I agree, always good to find some fellow USC Trojans in this neck of the woods, especially when we’re deep in Michigan and Notre Dame territory.

Plug and play your Google Profile link where you can, e.g. email signature, etc.

Thanks for this Google info. I did create a profile, and hopefully it will work. Do you have any jobs over there that all of us Out Of Work Chicagoans can apply for?

Wow – I thought I was pretty savvy, but this was really a great help, to get me on page 1 of a search. Up until this time, what usually showed up was a memorial chapel at Great Lakes Naval Training Station of a deceased aviator with the same name.
