This is wonderful, and very appropriate to many aspects of someone's life/career. I will share it. Networking from time to time when you have a job can help your marketability in many ways, both with your current and possible future jobs. You never know if someone you meet can help you or vise versa. These tips can be very useful to potential business owners as well. People do business with folks they trust, and the relationship has to start somewhere.

Such nice input. Thanks. Jan's comment reminded me that one of my favorite networking tricks (I am a dyed-in-the-wool introvert) is to pretend I am interviewing the person.

I ask questions, look interested, ask follow-up questions. It gets me past the initial hump of meeting a new person.

Patrick,

Thank you for the article #'s 3,4,5,6 and 8
were especially helpful to me. This is good information for me. Some days I am an introvert and other days I am an extrovert.
These are helpful for both sides of my personality.

Thanks for this advice. I have been networking for a year now and I finally feel I know what I am doing. I began volunteering with Out of Work Chicago for the same reason Jan indidcates, I figured if I had something to do I would be more comfortable leaving my comfort zone and it worked. This is great information for the intorverted or just anyone getting back out there for the purpos of a jobsearch.

Great list, Karen. I especially like #4. What a relief!

Someone once suggested I play "host" at networking events. This paired well with volunteering to coordinate events for one of the groups I participate in. When I'm sending invitations & accepting RSVPs, I truly feel like the host when the event takes place and feel less exposed.
